What Is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joints, which are responsible for connecting your jawbones to the rest of your skull. These joints grant your mouth its full range of motion; however, when they encounter issues, it often causes a patient to feel jaw pain and suffer from limited mobility, among other issues. TMJ disorder refers to any type of issue affecting these joints; it could be the result of a blow to the face, or it may be related to bite alignment problems, past oral trauma, or bruxism, which refers to teeth grinding/jaw clenching. If you’re experiencing chronic pain in your jaw, chances are, it’s related to TMJ disorder.
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

In addition to jaw pain, several other warning signs may point to a TMJ disorder. These common symptoms include:
- The sensation that your jaw is locked in place.
- Popping or clicking sounds are heard whenever you open or close your mouth.
- Earaches or a constant ringing sound heard in your ears.
- Difficulty or the inability to chew foods.
- Pain felt behind your eyes, cheeks, or forehead.
- A change in the way your teeth fit together.
Types of TMJ Treatment

It’s a wise idea to schedule an appointment if you suspect you have TMJ disorder. When you come into our office, we can assess your jaw, take X-rays and digital scans, and discuss our findings with you before turning our attention toward a suggested treatment plan. There are different types of treatments suited for different circumstances; we’ll always recommend what we think is best for you. Listed below are the different kinds of solutions you’ll find at our office:
Occlusal Splints

To protect the teeth from damage caused by grinding, as well as to help the jaw remain in a proper resting position, we may recommend an occlusal splint. This is a special type of oral device that is uniquely made to fit over your teeth. It fully prevents unfavorable contact between the arches of your teeth while also ensuring that no jaw strain occurs. They’re normally worn over the long term, but patients typically only need to use them during the nighttime.
